Tips for Generating Enthusiasm in the Workplace

If you’ve ever lain awake at night wondering how to move a project ahead, how to change directions or even how to gain cooperation from people, maybe you haven’t yet discovered what Dale Carnegie called “The little recognized secret of success”

Of course I’m speaking of Enthusiasm.

Not the wind up, climb the walls kind of misdirected enthusiasm, but real, genuine, heartfelt passion that kindles a fire in the belly kind.

You know what I’m talking about, you’ve seen it in many people as they have applied for jobs and got the position ahead of hundreds of other applicants, as they’ve led a team of people in a change effort that others said couldn’t be done, as they have bounced back from personal hardship or even as they faced the challenges that would stop a lesser person dead in their tracks.

I’ve always marveled at those people who know that they know that without enthusiasm, they become terribly boring and very unachieveable, in effect standing on the roadside watching the world speed by, never slowing down to offer them a ride.

Does this mean that if we are not the “Enthusiastic” kind of people we’re doomed?

Not at all.

Enthusiasm is simply a choice.

It doesn’t matter who you are, what your background is, what hardships you’ve endured, if you want to be enthusiastic, you simply have to choose to.

While you’re chewing on that bit of information, consider these 4 ways to generate instant enthusiasm:

1. Smile. The smile is your gateway to enthusiasm. I challenge you to get engaged in conversation with anyone who is happy and smiling and not catch the energy. Go to you tube, look up laughing and try not to feel better.

If you look at any successful team, you’ll often see that there is a lot of smiling and laughing which creates a powerfully uplifting culture.

2. Posture. If there’s a mirror in your work space, take a look at how you are sitting. Are you slumped over, head down sprawled out in your chair?

Slumping over closes your ability to breathe deeply from your belly or diaphram. It’s been proven that when you breathe deeply, you allow more oxygen to reach your brain and you think more clearly and things look brighter.

So, imagine there’s a string connected to the crown of your head and its pulling you up straight out of the chair. Allow your spine to straighten, your head to be higher and your rib cage more open and breathe deeply, feeling your belly expand. Feels good doesn’t it?

3. Walk. How many times have you heard someone say to you “Just walk it off” when you are feeling upset or out of sorts? It’s true that physical energy changes your focus and gets the blood moving through the lungs and into the brain.

4. Think. Negative thinking blinds us to our possibilities. As I mentioned earlier, enthusiasm is totally a choice. You can choose to be happy or you can choose to be crappy, but ultimately, it all comes down to the choice you make.You have to learn to let go of the things that are dragging you down. Asking yourself better questions can help to release the chains of negative thinking. Instead of whining “why me”, you could ask “How can I profit from this?” or “Why not me?”

Many people who have experienced hard times become so “me” focused that they can only see themselves as a victim, while all around them is opportunity. Refuse to join that crowd, you are the master of your ship. Step up to the rudder and steer it to where you want to go. No one else will do it for you, and when you take control, there is no limit to what you can create.

Act enthusiastic, and you will be enthusiastic.
