Often people only set one kind of goal and in doing this they set themselves up for a fall. There is more than one type of goal. Here they are:
1) Achievement goals – These talk about the end product that you hope to get. For example if you wanted a million dollar in the bank, get promoted next May, improve your company turnover by 10%. In reality most people’s big goals are like this.
2) Action goals – These are concerned with the actions you need to take to obtain the things you have stated. Examples of these might be go to a class to learn new computer skills, send a letter to all of the contacts you have about your new product, meet with someone to tell you about investment.
3) Layered goals – Describe the same intention with varying levels of difficulty or priority. As an example you may have the objective of reading more. You first aim would be to read one new book in a month, a lower priority would be to read two or three. These goals can push you to perform over the minimum.
4) Rate goals – Describe repeated action over a certain time frame. So that maybe to run twice a week, study Spanish one hour a day. If you are looking at personal development these goals are a great format.
5) Limit goals – These goals put a stop on something when it reaches a certain value. For example, have less than an hour for lunch, spend less than $100 on alcohol in a month, sleep by 10 every night.
6) Exclusion goals – State things that you will refrain from as a goal. So stopping or cutting down on smoking, not eating burgers and not taking the car to the shops when you can walk are examples. they help you to decide what you should avoid ahead of time.
7) Incredible goals – These are the aggressive life achievement goals that keep us all going. So they might be something like writing a hit screenplay, becoming a top judge or buying a penthouse. These will be your ultimate aims and can be reached by using the other various types of goals to get you there.
Many of your goals will be a combination of the above. You can make things more realistic for yourself if you take some time to think about which kind of goals suit your purposes.
